Sewing Tops, Shirts & Blouses

How to make a Top

Amber and Jaqi made "peasant blouses".

About Tops and Blouses Tops and blouse can be fun to make.  They are a little more difficult to make than other clothing.  The most quickest and most comfy top to make would be a throw over knit top with no buttons or pockets.
Best Fabric to use - Tops and Blouses can be made from many fabrics. Some suggestions are: light weight cotton, denim,  cotton blends, silk, rayon, and knit.
Easy Type Pattern - Tops are not as easy as making a straight line elastic waist skirt or shorts. Tops require sewing on curves, (the armholes and neck line) and tops have more pattern pieces. (even the easiest of tops)  The easiest type of pattern for tops would be a pull over with little pattern pieces. (3 or 4) No buttons - No  zippers
Difficult Type Pattern - The more difficult top patterns would be tops that are not pull over.  They may open with buttons, or a zipper. They may have sleeve and cuffs at the bottom of the sleeve that must be sewn in also.  I do not recommend these type of pattern until one is a very experienced sewer.
Pattern Pieces - Tops and Blouses have more patterns pieces than a simple pair of elastic shorts would have. An easy to make top or blouse might have 4-5 pattern pieces, while a difficult top or blouse might have 8-12 pattern pieces.
Cost & Fabric Usage - Because there are so many different kinds of fabric one can use for tops the cost is hard to determine.  A regular pull over type of top may use 1 to 1 1/2 yards of fabric.  Where a "halter top" or "tank top" may only require 1/2 or 3/4 of a yard.
Comments - Tops can be rewarding to make.  If you have never sewn before, make sure you find an easy pattern to start with.

This is an example of a "simple" top to make.  There are no buttons or zippers, and no sleeves to sew in.  The sleeves are in the front and back pattern piece. This is an easy to sew pattern.

When choosing a blouse, top, or shirt sewing pattern, keep in mind the difficulty of the pattern and your skill level. Most top patterns consist of: front bodice, back bodice, sleeve, collar, cuff, and facings. Usually fitted blouse patterns have a dart at the bust, shoulder, underarm, or waist allowing the garment to "fit" the front and back better. When purchasing sewing patterns for a top, blouse, or shirt, buy your pattern by your bust measurements.
