 Sewing Supplies

What do I need to begin sewing?

Sew your thinking about starting a new hobby. Some things you need for your new sewing or quilting hobby are necessities, and other things are optional, depending on your budget, and the type of sewing you are doing.  Below are a few suggestion lists.  The first list and most important one and it is a list of supplies that you will need no matter what type of sewing you are doing. ex. crafting, quilting, sewing for fun, or  dress making and design.

Once you have become more acquainted with your machine and your sewing skills as a designer, crafter, or quilter, we have other suggested list of supplies that you may need for a specific area of sewing.

Supplies you need:

(when beginning sewing, and/or bringing home a new machine)

A Sewing Machine

Pins ( see photo below)

Dress makers shears (scissors)

Extra sewing needles

Extra bobbins

Thread

Tape Measure

Seam Ripper

Hand sewing needles

It is important once you have decided to begin sewing to find a comfortable spot or area to sew.  You will need a sturdy table and chair, and an area for ironing. The amount of money you spend on your new hobby can be endless, from machines, to fabric, to patterns.  How far you choose to go with your sewing supplies is up to you and your budget. One rule of thumb that I have for myself and my students:
The happiest Sewers, Seamstresses and Quilters FINISH each project before heading onto the next. Try hard not to get into the habit of leaving unfinished projects around.  It can become frustrating, lead to disorganization skills,  and lack of self confidence. If you are at a situation where you are so upset and frustrated on a project I recommend that you put it away, start something new,  and pick it up again a week later.

Straight Pins - These should be made of high polished steel so that no marks will be left on the fabric.  If some rust up, throw them away. Seamstress pins are 1 1/8 inch in length.  There are ball point pins that can be used for knitted fabrics.  This magnet pin holder makes it easy to keep pins and to pick up ones that are scattered on a table.

Tape Measure - A linen tape with metal ends as shown in the photo is fine.  Linen tapes should never be rolled.
