Sewing & Making Shorts

How to Make Shorts

Shorts made from light weight denim cotton fabric.

About Shorts - Shorts are a great project to make for beginners.  The best thing about making shorts is YOU decide how short or long they are.   It is so frustrated finding a cute pair of shorts at the store, until you put them on , and they are to long or to short. But when you make them yourself, you decide where you want the length.
Best Fabric to use - Just about any fabric can be used to make shorts. Some suggestions are: light weight cotton, denim, corduroy, silk, rayon, and knit.
Easy type Pattern - An elastic waist band type of short is best for beginner sewers, as seen in the picture above.  Mostly straight stitching is used.
Difficult type Pattern Shorts that requires a sewn in waist band is more difficult and usually requires a zipper and button hole.  This type of shorts would be for a more advanced sewer.
Pattern Pieces - Shorts can have any where from 1 to 12 or more pattern pieces. One pattern piece being the easier short to make.  The photo above shows a pair of shorts made by one patter piece.
Cost & Fabric Usage - Shorts do not require much fabric. To make one pair of shorts would require about 3/4 to 1 1/4 yard of fabric  If the fabric is $7.00 a yard, and one has thread and elastic available, one could make a pair of shorts for about $5.00 or $9.00.
Comments - Remember when making a shorts to keep in mind the length, and the difficulty of the pattern. Shorts at any length, or any style will look great,  whether it's a loose fitting light weight cotton shorts for summer,  denim shorts with added appliqué, or knit shorts to play tennis in, shorts make a nice addition to your wardrobe of handmade clothing.

Handmade shorts are great for just lounging around the house in....Sewing Shorts with an elastic band is one of the easiest clothing projects you can make.
