Muslin Dolls that were Sewn - Handmade Fabric Dolls

 Photo Pages 1 - 2 - 3 - 4

This adorable pink and cream calico raggedy doll was made for my best friend Sarah after she graduated from nursing school.

Alexandra made this colonial muslin doll.  What is so unique about the making of the doll is EVERY stitch was hand sewn!  A big storm hit her town, she lost electricity for 3 days.  It took her 5 and 1/2 hours of hand sewing to make her doll, Rebecca.

This doll is so adorable.  You just want to pick her up. The Showmanship Award in the Amateur division of one of our doll contests went to Darlene  from MO.  She used a pattern from Judy Ward.  Her doll is "Sweetie."

Katherine and Catherine made and designed their own Dorothy doll and Toto from "The Wizard of OZ"

The "Best Friends" dolls are made from muslin.  You decide the color hair and clothes you want you and your best friend to have.

Alyssa wanted to make a doll for her little sister's birthday.   She said she liked mermaids.  Making this doll was a big hit with everyone during sewing camp.

Early cloth doll bodies were homemade with scraps of fabric.  Nothing was thrown out or wasted back then.  Most were constructed with a front and a back including legs. The arms were attached separately. One piece body dolls were produced commercially in the early 1800's in many European countries.  By 1840 muslin bodies were being made that could sit. Click here for more history of the muslin doll.

A muslin fabric doll made in garden fabrics and holding a rusty watering can makes a nice handmade gift for the lady that loves to garden.
