Making & Sewing things for your Dog or Puppy

Twiggy is ready for her 1st "Fashion Show for Dogs" in an outfit her owner designed and made her.

About Sewing for Dogs and Puppies- There are many neat things you could make for your dog or puppy, like; coats, clothes, dog costumes, a stocking for Christmas, doggie beds, toys, and doggy quilts. Take care when making clothing for your dog in not having it too tight, and only have him/her wear costumes in your site.  If you intend on having costumes or clothes for your dog, it is best to start them off as puppies so they will get used to the fact of wearing clothes, or hats. Most importantly, have fun with your dog and what you make it!!!
Best Fabric to use- Stay clear of "itchy" fabrics.  Dogs, just like humans can be bothered by fabric that is itchy or uncomfortable.  Also, stay away from fabric that may make one sweat.  The best fabrics for dog clothes and coats would be 100 % cotton fabrics that "breathe."  Also flannel and fleece are good for dog coats.
Easy Type Patterns- There are many "easy to sew" dog coats and garment patterns in your local fabric store. As a matter of fact, I haven't come across a difficult dog pattern yet.  Find ones with just simple coats and patterns that say "easy" or "make in an hour" type of patterns.
Difficult Type patterns- -
Pattern Pieces- For beginner sewers just stay clear of patterns that look difficult or have many pattern pieces.  If you are a beginner than start with a simple dog coat, it should only have 1-3 pattern pieces.
Cost and Fabric usage- Even bigger dogs are much smaller than humans so you will not need as much fabric, thus, cutting your cost down.  For a smaller dog, you could make a dog coat with about 3/4 of a yard of fabric.
Comments- Remember to make it fun for your dog.  Compliment him/her while you are measuring them so they think it is fun.  Dog coats are a great idea for those cool fall days and winter walks.
