Preparing Your
Sewing Area |
 |
| |
|
Whether you are an expert seamstress or just beginning to learn to sew,
making sure your sewing area is neat, organized, and comfortable is
important. Sitting and sewing in an uncomfortable chair, or sewing
with improper lighting will eventually effect the way you sew and how you
feel. Improper sitting could cause back, neck, and wrist problems,
and over all body ache. Improper lighting can cause stress on your eyes
which over time could create other problems.
Once you have a
sewing machine that is right for you, you will need a work space or area.
The best would be if you can have your own sewing room which has natural
lighting and a door that can be shut to keep children out and your work
room out of site when company arrives. |
|
 |
This photo shows our
sewing room which used to be a family "sun room". It has all
natural lighting so that solved our lighting problem, however, this sun
room lead to our pool and whenever anyone wanted to go the pool, they had
to pass this room. This room is now our, cutting, pressing, and
reading patterns room. |
|
If at this time, you
are not able to have your own sewing room, a corner area in a den or bedroom
will be sufficient. Just make sure everyone in your family knows
that this is YOUR work area and to stay clear of it.
Once you have your
sewing machine and your work area ready, there are few other things to
consider.
Your sewing machine
should be in a sturdy table that is approximately 26-28" high.
Your cutting table
should be about 3'x6' and about 32" high. You can purchase one of these at
stores like: Wal-Mart or Kmart that can easily fold up and put away when
you need that extra room. |
|
Pressing equipment
should be kept near your sewing area because of the amount of pressing you
will be doing. An iron, ironing board, and other pressing equipment
should be kept in reach. Click here for the importance of pressing
and pressing methods. |
|
|
 |
Simple storage
shelves filled with plastic labeled boxes are ideal for organizing your
patterns and supplies. |
|
Your chair should be
selected carefully, after all you will be spending a great deal of time in
it. You should get one with NO arms, they will just get in the way while
you sew. When choosing a chair, look for one that has both
adjustable height and back support. |
