Flat-Felled Seam...
how to make a Flat-Felled seam |
|
The flat-felled seam
is a flat, very strong seam that you will find on most denim garments
like: jeans, jackets, shorts, shirts. It is not suitable for
heavy or bulky fabrics. Nor is it suitable for sheer fabrics or fabrics
that fray. As most seams for garments are sewn pretty sides together, a
flat-felled seam requires seam to be sewn with the ugly sides together.
Below is photographs and instructions on how to make a flat-felled seam. |

Cut two 4" X 4" squares
of denim fabric to practice on.

Place your fabric squares
UGLY sides together and pin. Stitch down the side seam using a 5/8
" seam allowance. |

Trim just ONE
of the seam allowances close to the edge. |

Press and fold over
the seam allowance that was not trimmed. |

Stitch close to the
folded edge. |
| On a flat-felled seam
the stitching shows on the outside or pretty side of your garment so make
sure your stitching is neat, and your lines are straight. Generally there
will be 2 lines of stitching as seen in the photos above. The
flat-felled seam works best on straight seam lines, and is NOT recommended
on curved seams. |
