Purchasing a New Sewing Machine

When purchasing a new sewing machine there is much to consider.  Is one a beginner? Is it for a child? Will you be sewing heavy duty fabrics or quilts? How often will the machine be used? These are questions to take into consideration. If you would be sewing a lot and enjoy embroidering on fabric then I would suggest a machine that does so.  If you are a new sewer and not even sure if you will enjoy it or you are buying a machine for a child who shows an interest but aren't quit sure yet if it's the hobby they want to continue, then I would suggest a "White's" brand, or a "Brother", or a "Singer".  Spend no more than $350.00 BUT spend no less than $125.00.

Here at Crafts of Chadds Ford we have 11 machines, and use 3 different models of "White's" machines, ( a division of Viking) one Bernette, and two Brothers.

I DO NOT suggest any one buying a simple "toy" sewing machine that runs about $40.-$60.00.  They simply do not work as a machine to make clothes or crafts and will only frustrate a child.  As so will a $2,000.00 computerized machine for a child or a new sewer.

I would have to say this is the most common question that I get asked in my sewing school.  And I tell everyone the same thing that I have written above.
