How to make a Pumpkin Hot Pad / Pumpkin Doily

This adorable quilted pumpkin hot pad can also be used as a Autumn doily. Just place it under a candy dish, photo frame, or your favorite Autumn decorative piece!

For this project you will need:  one "fat quarter" (1/4 yard) of orange fabric, a scrap piece of green fabric, quilt batting, and basic sewing needs.

Gather up your fabric and supplies.

First you will need a pattern for your pumpkin doily.  You are more than welcome to copy and paste the photo to the left.  You will have to enlarge it before you print it. This pattern was drawn on a 8 1/2" X 11" piece of paper.

Once your pattern is printed you will need to:

For Pumpkin:

-cut 2 of pumpkin from orange fabric

-cut 1 of pumpkin from quilt batting

For Stem:

-cut 2 of stem from green fabric

-cut 1 of stem from quilt batting

Making the Stem:

Place the quilt batting stem on the table then place the green fabric stem pieces PRETTY SIDES TOGETHER on top of the batting.

Pin in place. Leave the bottom of the stem open for turning.

Stitch around the stem using 1/4" seam or your pressure foot as your guide.

Don't forget, don't sew the bottom!

Trim around the stem being careful not to cut into your stitches.

Turn the stem to pretty sides out through the bottom where you didn't sew, and press the stem flat.

Place the stem on top of one of the pumpkin pieces pretty side up, with raw edges together. (see photo) Notice the stem is down.

Pin in place.

Stitch in place.

Making the Pumpkin:

Place the pumpkin batting flat on a table.  Place the pumpkin pieces PRETTY SIDES TOGETHER on top of the batting.

Pin around the pumpkin.

Leave a 5" opening at the bottom for turning.

Stitch around the pumpkin using a 1/4" seam. Don't forget to leave the opening at the bottom.

Trim seams.

Turn pumpkin pretty side out.

Press it so it lies nice and flat.

Quilting the Pumpkin Doily:

Hand stitch the lines on the pumpkin using a simple running stitch.

Hand stitch were indicated on the pattern piece by broken lines.

Well, your cute little pumpkin doily/hot pad is done.  Display it proudly in your home with your other autumn decorations.
