Designing, Sewing, & Making Ponchos and Capes

How to Make a Poncho

Seven year old Cami makes an adorable poncho.

About Ponchos - Ponchos are fun and easy to make.  They are a great project for the beginner sewer.
Best Fabric to use - Just about any fabric can be used to make ponchos. Some suggestions are: fleece (as seen below), cotton, denim, corduroy, light weight wool, wool blends, and velvet.
Easy type Pattern - An easy pattern would be like the one shown above.  This pattern only had 2 pieces; a back on fold and a front pattern to cut out two. Very, very easy to make. The photo shown above is a great start for beginner sewers.
Difficult type Pattern - A harder type of pattern for ponchos and capes might require a closure, a hood, and lining.  This would be for the intermediate sewer.
Pattern Pieces -     Ponchos and Capes can be an easy pattern with 2 pattern pieces, and a more difficult or advance pattern with up to about 10 pattern pieces.
Cost & Fabric Usage - Smaller ponchos like shown above do not require that much fabric and do not require to be lined therefore that particular poncho would not be that expensive to make. It would just be the cost of your fabric, thread and pattern. However, long capes like on the movie "Phantom of the Opera" require more fabric and lining can cost a bit but they are absolutely beautiful to see, and a great and fun challenge to make.
Comments - Ponchos and Capes are fairly easy to make because they are a cover-up or "coat" if you will, but do not require a set in sleeve which is more difficult to do.  They also don't really need some type of closure, just a matching pin would look nice.  I recommend this type of project for beginner to intermediate sewers.

Ponchos and Capes are very "in" or "vogue" now.  They can be Granny's crocheted shawl which can be worn day or evening, by mothers and daughters. It is the biggest fashion success. Some ponchos have fringed edges.  Handmade ponchos can be awesome to make. Why not challenge yourself and make one today :-)

Here is Jamie's poncho that she made in the beginning of fall to wear to school on those cool mornings. It is made of decorative appliquéd fleece.  Looks Great!!!

I found these beautiful ponchos at an outdoor craft fair that was held in Maryland.  They were handmade by the frame shown here.

Below is a photo of the artist showing how the hand-woven is done into creating a beautiful poncho.
