Patterns for Sewing...Reading a Pattern Envelope

When choosing a pattern for sewing garments, keep in mind how difficult the garment will be to make.  Study the illustrations to see if that style fits your need and your skill level. If you are a beginner you will want the simplest pattern you can find.

Pattern envelopes will have valuable information when making a garment like:

-illustrations of the finished garments, front view and back view

-price

-size charts

-yardage of fabric required (how much of either 45" or 60")

-fabric suggestions (knit, stretch only, cotton, wool, etc...)

-a list of notions you will need (zipper, hem tape, buttons, etc...)

-yardage of lining and interfacing required

Most fabric which comes on a bolt will be either 45" or 60" wide.  Note on your pattern envelope that MOST patterns give measurements for both widths. Before you get your fabric cut, make sure you have looked at the correct width. You can always purchase more fabric than what the pattern calls for, but never purchase less, or will not have enough fabric to complete your project.

All patterns allow some ease for comfort and movement.  If a pattern was cut to your exact body measurement or size, then sewn, it would fit too tight and there would be no room for movement.

Loose fitted styles of clothing have more ease and room in them but in general most pattern sizes have some ease in them as listed below.

Bust measurements + 3"

Waist measurements +1"

Hip measurements +2"

Pattern companies offer some or all of these categories:

-Infant

-Toddler

-Child boy/girl

-Missy/Young girls

-Junior Petite/Teen

-Women

-Men
