Sewing and Making Pajamas
How to Make
Pajamas |
 |
|
Simple Pajama Pants made of
soft flannel for any season.
|
| About Pajamas -
|
Pajamas are fun to make,
especially the soft flannel pajama pants. Pajamas can be made into pants,
shorts, night shirts, or gowns. |
| Best Fabric to use -
|
The best fabrics for pajamas
are materials that "breath". Meaning they don't make you sweat or
hold moisture. Some suggestions are: light weight cotton, soft flannel,
and silk. |
| Easy type pattern -
|
The easiest pajama pattern
would be a simple pair of elastic waist band shorts or pants as seen in
the middle picture. Most pajama patterns with an elastic waist band and no
pockets has only 2 pattern pieces. |
| Difficult type pattern -
|
Pajama's with lots of pattern
pieces and button holes are more difficult to make as seen in the picture
on the right. You will not find pajama patterns with zippers because that
would be uncomfortable to sleep in. |
| Pattern Pieces -
|
Pajamas can have any where from
2 pattern pieces as show in the middle picture, or as many as 12 for
more difficult and detailed pajamas. |
| Cost & Fabric Usage -
|
Pajama pants require about 1
1/2 yards of fabric. Pajama night shirts and gown require about 1
1/2 to 3 or 4 yards. For flannel fabric @ $5.00 a yard, elastic @ $2.00,
and thread @ $2.00, a pajama night shirt could be made for about $12.00,
with left over thread and elastic for your next project. |
| Comments - |
Making your own pajamas has
it's benefits. Besides saving money, one can work with soft fabric
that is easy to sew and find the color and print of your choice. One
can never have enough pajamas, so the pattern can be used over and over
again. NOTE: If you are making flannel pajamas for children,
use the flame resistant fabrics. |

Shirt with pockets, button holes, set-in sleeves, and curved hem. |
|
Important
Note:
It is imperative that only
flame-resistant fabric be used when sewing children's pajamas. You
can find this on the end of the roll of fabric at the fabric store. DO NOT
use material unless it is fire resistant.
Brushed and other nylon fabric is a
better choice for a nightgown because nylon will melt and burn but it
won't flare up. In general, pajamas are safer than nightgowns
because they are close to the body.
|
|
| The thread you should use is dacron
. If you use cotton or other thread a flame will shoot up the line
of stitching and cause serious burning, while the garment made from
flame-resistant fabric will smolder with little or no harm. |
