No mistakes... just Lessons Learned

I leave this spot to share with you my many lessons I have learned throughout the years, so that you too may learn from them.

My most embarrassing lesson was many years ago. I will never forget this day.   I was in eighth grade and my family lived in Canada at the time.  It was field day and I wanted to wear something new. So I quickly made myself a really cute pair of light blue denim overall pants trimmed in dark blue thread (the top stitching was dark blue).  I even made a matching hat.  I must say, I looked pretty cute in that new outfit.  Everyone loved it and couldn’t believe I made it.  Well, we all ran outside to start our field day.  We were so happy to be outside for the day just playing and doing relays.  So we all started doing kart-wheels. Well, on my first kart-wheel my pants split at the crotch seam with the loudest rip you every heard.  It seemed like the whole country heard it.  I was so embarrassed.   Thank goodness I had a sweatshirt that I wrapped around my waist for the rest of the day.  By the end of the day the rip was down to my knees. My friends and I laughed so hard!!!

Lesson learned- Don’t rush your sewing and ALWAYS stitch the crotch seam TWICE for extra reinforcement.

This lesson was a very painful one.  I was in 9th grade and living in the suburbs of Chicago at the time.  I couldn’t wait to go out with my friends, but I had to do chores first.   The last thing I had to do was vacuum my mom’s room where she did her sewing.  I was in bare feet and I was pushing that vacuum as fast and as hard as I could to get the job done.  Suddenly I felt an excruciating pain in my left foot near my big toe.  I turned off the vacuum and looked down at all the blood on my foot and the floor.  I know your thinking that I stepped on a pin. Nope, we looked and looked and couldn’t find anything, so we bandaged it up and I went on my way.  Well, as the days passed, it became more painful and the swelling increased.  Days later I had to have it cut open only to find an embroidery needle that went    1 ½” deep in my foot with the eye of the needle going in first and the rest of the needle broken off. Ouch! This lesson is one of my Safety tips!

Here is a picture of two different kinds   of   needles.  The needle on the right is a  regular hand sewing needle.  The needle on  the left is an embroidery needle.  That's the  size of the one that was in my foot for a couple of days. So please remember: Always wear proper shoes when in a sewing area.

Lesson learned- Always where shoes when in a sewing room!
