Sewing for Maternity Wear

How to Make Clothes for the expectant Mom

Keep in mind when making garments for maternity wear the most important consideration would be comfort.  If un-waisted dresses are in vogue , the pregnant women is lucky because she can make fashionable clothing lines with easy sewing patterns.  A one piece dress is often a good choice but it should not be worn too short, even if minis are in style.  Many one piece dress easy sewing patterns are available.  The eye should be drawn upwards near the neckline with pretty trimmings, jewelry on the neck and in style flattering collars.

Cotton is an excellent fabric for making and sewing maternity clothing.  Whether the weather is cool or warm, cotton is comfortable, easy to lauder, and is a fabric that "breaths."  A simple easy to sew jumper would be an excellent addition to your maternity wardrobe.  I should be simple in style and in a dark color.  Avoid large fabric prints.

Easy skirt patterns can be found to make for comfortable skirts that hand straight.  You will need room for expansion as the pregnancy grows.  Here are two ways to provide more room in a skirt for the expectant mother.

Cut - Out - "U" - The photo on the right shows a skirt with a cut out "U" where stretch fabric is placed.  The works best with light with fabrics

This photo on the left shows a panel that is inserted in the skirt front with stretch fabric for extra comfort and ease.

Pants should be made in fabrics that are comfortable and easy to move in.  This is important because of the swelling that occurs in pregnant women especially during the summer months.

Loose style coats are usually in fashion and are great for the pregnant women.  Large patterns on the baric should be avoided.  Capes are another great idea for moms to be and very easy to sew.
