Kids
Really Can Sew!
|

| If you have any doubt
that kids can sew on a sewing machine, let me set your mind at ease. I
questioned it my self too in the beginning. But kids can sew & craft
and they do a great job at it, even as young as 6 years old. It’s
funny that I would even question it, since I began sewing at such an early
age. If you are interested in teaching kids to sew, it is a very rewarding
job. Here is
more information on teaching sewing. |
| Sewing and crafting
builds self-esteem. Children learn the value of completing a project
and they gain confidence in them selves. Sewing is an individual art
allowing one to go at ones own pace and allowing one to choose color,
texture, and creativity to each project. That makes each project special
and unique, a one of a kind. As long as a child is taught with
positive reinforcements they will enjoy learning. There are no
mistakes, only lessons learned.
|
|
| Children are great
listeners and learners if you make it fun and appealing to them. It’s been
shown that a child’s creative ability is best developed between the ages
of 6-12. The art of sewing helps provide this creative spark. |

Here is a 6 year old Alyssa intensely
hand sewing the opening of her purple pieced star pillow. Behind her is 9
year old Kelly finishing up her sewing bag which was her first project.

Here is Allison, Jaclyn, Emily, Samantha, and
Courtney. It was by chance that these 5 girls were in the same week of camp
together. They were friends and young in age, but very eager and active in
their sewing skills. They accomplished so much in one week. What a great
group!

I think the best thing about sewing (besides
how much fun it is) is that each student works at their own pace, on their
own project, using their own creative choices. From left to right is
Alyssa and Christina who made a bunny holding a carrot in a basket. Next
is Jacqueline who in her own creative mind wanted to make an "Eagles quilt"
GO EAGLES! Then her sister Kelly had her first class and she made her
sewing bag. On the right is one of my youngest students Alyssa who is
proudly showing her star pillow.

Alyssa (my youngest student) iron one of her projects. Sometimes we just
have to improvise by using chairs to stand on and phone books to sit on... |

Recommended Sewing
Machines for Kids Sewing, and for Beginners
I receive many questions on what
would be the best sewing machine for kids or beginners. I have simple basic
machines for my students that range from $99.-$300. That is my
recommendation, a basic machine for starters. Here are some below.
