Sewing and Making Robes, Bath Robes, and House Coats

Here is Alexandra and her housecoat or house robe that she made from appliquéd fleece. Great job...This was her first time working from a commercial pattern.

Sewing House Robes - Sewing house robes is very rewarding.  They are something to just hang out around the house in and snuggle up in and watch your favorite TV show with.  In general, making a house robe is for the intermediate sewer.  Beginners should attempt something more simpler like shorts or a skirt with an elastic waistband before attempting a house robe.
Best Fabric to Use - The best type of fabric to make a handmade house robe would be: for summer; terry-cloth, light weight cotton, gauze, or silk.  For winter; flannel, fleece, and a heavier cotton or terry-cloth.
Easy type Pattern - An easier type of pattern would be like the robe shown above. The sleeves were NOT set-in-sleeves and no closure was made.  The robe just wraps around the body and is held on by a belt.
Difficult type Pattern A more difficult pattern for a house coat would be one with a closure instead of a belt, or one with a more difficult collar, or one with set-in-sleeves. Or just a real fancy one like shown below on actress Natalie Portman.
Pattern Pieces - House robes come in a large variety of patterns.  Most patterns will have about 6-12 pattern pieces.
Cost & Fabric Usage Food terry cloth, velour, and fleece can cost  quite a bit of money for a house robe especially since you will need about 2 - 2 1/2 yards or more of fabric.
Comments - Whether you call it a house robe, house coat, or bath robe, they are comfy and fun to make. I recommend intermediate sewers to make a project like this.

You can find house robe sewing patterns at any local fabric store. Cotton, Fleece, and Flannel work well in making a handmade house robe or bath robe. Fleece and Flannel will stay soft wash after wash and are great for winter robes.  Silk and cotton robes are better for summer time.

Alyssa made this beautiful silk house robe.  The fabric came from a student who lives in Hong Kong and comes to summer camp every year.

Look at this beautiful night robe that Natalie Portman wore in star wars.
