How to Make a
Christmas Yo-Yo Doily (lacy mat) |

Yo-Yo Quilts and Doilies
date back to the depression times, when every inch of fabric mattered.
Today, they are handmade and used a room decorations, quilts, pillows, and
more. This project is completely made by hand sewing!!!
 |
Gather up
some Christmas homespun's and calico fabrics.
Make yourself a yo-yo pattern from a
circle. I used the pin cushion shown in the photo.
Since everything is red and green for
Christmas, I decided to make a red and cream color yo-yo doily. |
 |
Pin and cut
16 circles of different color fabrics from your pattern. |
 |
Now we are
going to make our yo-yos. You
will make one at a time.
They are very easy to make.
Thread a needle and knot the end. You will do a simple quick
running stitch on the edge of the circle as shown in the photo. |
 |
Once you
have gone all the way around the circle, pull the threads and you will
see the edges of the yo-yo come up, just like the photo. |
|

|
Continue
pulling up the threads and knot the end to hold your yo-yo in place.
With your fingers adjust the yo-yo so that the circle looks nice and
even. |
|

|
Do this to
all 16 circles until you have 16 yo-yos.
Arrange them in the order you want them
for your doily. Press them flat. |
|

|
Begin hand
sewing one to another on the back of the yo-yo by simply tacking them
together with little stitches as shown in the photo. |
 |
Do this to
all 16 until they are all sewn together.
Your Christmas yo-yo doily is done.
Show it or give it to a person who lived through the depression and
they will appreciate it greatly. |
