What is Fashion?

(Your on-line Fashion Design Study Guide)

Fashion is the existing type of clothing that is prefered by a large segment of the public at one given time.

Fashion is an existing type of clothing that is preferred by a large segment of the public at a given time. What super model Heidi Klum, from Project RUNWAY, has to say is so true… “As you know with Fashion…One day you’re in, and the next you could be out.”

Style is a particular shape of type of apparel item identified by the distinct feature that makes it unique.  For example, a mini skirt.  A mini skirt is identified by its very short skirt showing plenty of leg. A style becomes a fashion when it becomes popular. It remains a fashion as long as people keep buying it. Styles remain constant but fashion is always changing.  A style is usually acceptable for one year, but usually not the next.

Merchandising in the fashion industry can be divided into two categories. One is "basic merchandise." This is when items are purchased on a regular basis. Retailers know that customers will always buy them, so they are always in stock.  An example of this would be socks. Second is "Fashion Merchandising."  These are goods that are popular at a certain time.  Customer see these goods in advertisements such as TV, magazines, internet, etc. and then buy them.

Fashion Basics: Design is a particular or unique version of a style due to a certain arrangement of the basic elements. Design is important to the development of fashion because it establishes the final appearance of a product or garment.
