A career in Costume design is
not easy. In fact it is very hard. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work.
But, it is not impossible and has many rewards.
What to study -take courses in History of Costume. If only fashion
courses are available than take them. Study drawing and painting, that's how the
costume in your imagination gets to where the producer or director can see it.
You must be able to sketch your designs. Study textiles, color; understand
dyeing fabrics, draping, and pattern making. Study anything related to theatre,
including acting. This way you can learn how the actor goes about creating a
character. Study computer art programs like Photoshop. Everyone these days is
expected to be a computer proficient.
In addition to
studying at a University it is important to constantly research industries
where costuming is advancing. Every year
Halloween costumes become more elaborate and are designed to higher
standards. In addition, there are countless affordable, but still inspired
designs used every year by thousands upon thousands of children and adults.
Halloween is an estimated six billion dollar a year industry, which make
designing a popular costume very lucrative.
